RÓT – BARBARA Í GONGINI

She is known for her groundbreaking, charcoal-black avant-garde designs – on Saturday Barbara Í Gongini opens her first solo exhibition of works of art. The exhibition will be held in the new exhibition hall Uppiá in Steinprent.
Although the new works do not have any applied art function, we again learn the dark aesthetics of the artist and designer, Barbara í Gongini, who in 2017 received the National Cultural Prize for her clear and artistically gifted work. In interviews with magazines in Denmark, where she lives, and internationally, she repeatedly emphasizes the importance of the material and that we must respect the resource. She also always mentions her Faroese origins as a collective soundtrack in everything she does. This sound seems dark and harsh, but with a special respect for the possibilities that burst out of the very limitations.
In her art, Barbara í Gongini uses monochrome art in a similarly undemanding and reductive manner. The fundamental root of all of Barbara í Gongin’s work is the drawing, to which she is returned. But instead of being a substitute, a tool or part of the creation of clothespins, the drawing with its vibrating, rhythmic movement is now allowed to unfold and become independent works of art – pictures, reliefs and statues.
The materials, which are water, graphite, oil, sand and paper, are part of a raw, primitive artistic thought, where movement inscribes itself directly into the material. The works therefore oscillate between body and intention, between material intelligence and visual exploration. Welcome to the vernissage Uppiá in Steinprent on Saturday 29 November at 15-17, where there will be an opportunity to greet the artist.
